From September 1999 to April 2002, 18 engineering battalions (around 6'000 soldiers) were deployed on a full-time or part-time basis for the implementation phase. These formations worked for the Expo.02 management or for federal projects (shipyard, accompanying measures at Meyriez and the Federal Office for Sport).

The work involved in setting up the engineering teams amounted to around 15'000 man-days.
