Magglingen

Artplace

The grounds of the Swiss Federal Sports School in Magglingen are situated high above the town of Biel-Bienne and offer great views. As a quiet side stage of Expo.02 and its Arteplages, the Artplace pavilion built there offered changing artists the opportunity to work and exhibit on the theme of movement and sport for the duration of the Swiss national exhibition.

The elongated structure was divided into open and covered sections. In combination with the two double doors and several sliding walls, countless room layouts and a wide variety of passageways could be created. The outer walls of the building, which was later completely recycled, consisted of 700 translucent plastic containers stretched over a metal frame. In addition to its spatial variability, the building's appeal lay above all in the interplay of nature and light with the membrane-like outer shell.
