SRG SSR idée suisse

SRG SSR idée suisse was an Official Partner and supported Expo.02.

As a national media organisation committed to public service, the linguistic and cultural diversity of Switzerland presents SRG SSR idée suisse with a particularly challenging task: SRG SSR uses the Idée suisse to consistently communicate its public service as a quality brand. The Idée suisse stands for SRG SSR's public service. This consists of all the services provided by the non-profit organisation. The basis for this is a network of solidarity between majorities and minorities and between minorities and majorities in Switzerland.

In its programmes, SRG SSR communicates Swiss reality in all its facets and areas such as information, culture, films and television dramas, entertainment, sport, children's and youth programmes, thereby making a significant contribution to understanding in this country.

SRG SSR idée suisse receives its licence by law, but is obliged to produce and broadcast radio and television programmes in all four national languages as a national and regional-language broadcaster. In doing so, it must take into account the cultural and ethnic diversity of Switzerland. As a company under private law - i.e. it is not a state institution but a private company - it also serves the general public and does not pursue any profit motives. SRG SSR is based in Berne.

The seven radio studios in Zurich, Berne, Basel, Geneva, Lausanne, Lugano and Chur, the three regional studios in Aarau, Lucerne and St. Gallen and Swissinfo/Swiss Radio International (SRI) together produce 17 programmes with a total output of over 210,000 hours. The three television studios in Zurich, Geneva and Lugano produce two programmes for each language region. SF DRS also operates SF info, a repeat channel for information programmes. The Rhaeto-Romanic television programmes are broadcast via the Schweizer Fernsehen DRS channel. SRG SSR produces a total of almost 50,000 hours of television programmes.

The publishers Ringier, NZZ and Basler Zeitung, which have joined forces to form Presse TV, broadcast their self-produced programmes as private, licensed programme makers on SF 2 at weekends. In addition to the radio programmes, Swissinfo/Swiss Radio International also operates an Internet competence centre (www.swissinfo.org), which provides worldwide access to SRG SSR programmes and a wide range of information from Switzerland.

SRG SSR is also a programme co-producer for the German and French-language joint channels 3 Sat and TV 5; SRG SSR provides programmes for Eurosport, Euronews, Arte, CNN and RAI Sat. SRG SSR is also an active member of the European Broadcasting Union EBU-UER, an organisation of European, mainly public service broadcasters (69 active members, 45 associate members) whose tasks include the exchange of news and programmes in Eurovision.

SRG SSR covers two thirds of the costs of producing and broadcasting radio and television programmes with reception fees (CHF 1.16 per day and household, excluding VAT) and one third with advertising and sponsorship money. At the end of 2000, 2.7 million radio and television licences had been issued in Switzerland.
