Logistics

In addition to the logistics for the catering (delivery of food and drinks), waste was a major issue. Around 4'000 tonnes of waste were produced on all four Arteplages. 400 g per visitor per day. In addition, uniforms had to be cleaned and green areas kept in good condition. This required good logistics from an ecological point of view.

Waste

The waste management concept had two objectives: To produce as little waste as possible. What is nevertheless produced is recycled or disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.

The catering establishments were obliged to collect kitchen waste, glass, aluminium and tinplate, PET and paper as well as cardboard separately. A private waste disposal company took the recyclable materials for recycling and the residual waste to the neighbouring incineration plants. Biogas was extracted from the kitchen waste.

Active measures to minimise waste

No aluminium cans were sold on the Expo.02 site. Beer and mineral water were served in glasses. The mobile take-aways served couscous or risotto on organic plates made from maize starch. Expo.02 also took preventative measures to raise awareness among young visitors: 50'000 teachers received teaching documentation on the subject of waste. In this way, the Expo.02 organisers wanted to encourage pupils to think about how they deal with waste. Before visiting the national exhibition, each class appointed a waste manager.

Sustainability in waste disposal

Waste disposal cost around half a million CHF. A further million was spent on collecting and transporting the waste. There was a logistics centre on each Arteplage, where hazardous waste such as batteries and light bulbs were also temporarily stored. The 490 waste bins distributed across the four Arteplages were sold to the cities of Basel, Biel-Bienne and Winterthur for reuse after Expo.02.

Clothing logistics

Every Expo.02 employee who worked at the reception or for the protocol wore the Expo.02 uniform. A company was commissioned to clean the 40'000 uniforms. A courier service travelled back and forth between the four Arteplages twice a day to collect dirty clothes and replace them with clean ones. In addition, a sewing service ensured that any necessary alterations were made to items of clothing.

Cleaning

The cleaning of all four Arteplages was also part of the logistics. Every morning between 05:00 and 08:30, the total area of 475'000 m2 was cleaned, followed by further cleaning during the day. Around 450 people cleaned the Arteplages during Expo.02.

Maintenance of gardens and green areas

Another company was responsible for the maintenance of the gardens and green areas: cutting, watering, fertilising the lawns and much more.
