Auguste Piccard

The Mésoscaphe

Auguste Piccard's Mésoscaphe was one of the main attractions of Expo 64: over 33'000 visitors were carried off into the depths of Lake Geneva in the world's first tourist submarine. Today, 38 years later, the submarine is resurfacing to be exhibited at Expo.02. The Mésoscaphe on the Arteplage Murten-Morat has not been restored, but is being shown as it is today.

Yesterday an icon of progress, today it is a witness of a visionary past and builds a bridge to Expo 64. At the same time, it refers to the theme of the Arteplage Murten-Morat: moment and eternity - as a rusty monument to the transience of time and progress.
