During the operational phase of Expo.02, the troops were deployed for public security via the police corps of the cantons of Berne, Fribourg, Neuchâtel and Vaud.
13 battalions, mostly infantry formations, supported the police corps, with one company per corps. Their tasks included traffic control, surveillance, prevention and information.
On the lakes, the army provided motorboat and genie formations as well as four P80 patrol boats to ensure the mobility of the police and/or other security and assistance organisations. In addition, the army provides a budget totalling 800 days of service for members of the armed forces who belong to the Swiss Life Saving Association.
In addition, one medical and one rescue company were permanently stationed in the Expo.02 area as a reserve element. They were ready to support the security and emergency services and provide reinforcement if necessary.
Other formations were on duty sporadically, for example at important events (3 road police companies and a detachment of a transport recruit school) or as a reserve element (1 military police battalion). However, the military police battalion never had to be deployed to support the police corps.
Finally, the Air Force provided the police with means of transport (2 Alouette 3 helicopters and 1 Super Puma).
From 01.05.2002 to 25.10.2002, a total of around 11'000 members of the Swiss Army completed their refresher course as part of Expo.02, with some being deployed directly for police duties and others as reserves.
In addition to the troops, the army provided the police formations with equipment (means of communication, navigation, etc.) and vehicles. Medical containers for the Swiss Samaritan organisation were also installed on the Arteplages.
