The Octogone

La poétique de l'infini

Halfway between the Berntor city gate and the lake shore, visitors will discover the Octogone, which houses a work by Roman Opalka. Since 1965, this painter of Polish origin has dedicated his life to a unique art project: he paints numbers. He started on his first canvas 37 years ago with One, and he’s still painting. All the numbers are depicted in white on a canvas that gradually fades over the years, until at some point they merge into the plain white background. In the heart of the Arteplage Murten-Morat, the unalterable passing of absolute time is thus revealed - and a captivating poetry of infinity.
